The Catalan newspaper AVUI asked in July its readers to participate in a virtual election of the new EU President under the Lisbon Treaty. Readers could choose one out of 7 short-listed names through AVUI’s website. Almost 7000 readers cast their vote in the course of this 7-day poll, which was accompanied by a daily article on every “candidate”.
The top places in the poll were taken by the two woman candidates, indicating that the participants would want to see a Mrs Europe instead of Mr Europe. The poll showed a clear support for German Chancellor Angela Merkel (29% of votes). The current President of Finland, Tarja Halonen, won the second place (17%), narrowly followed by the former Spanish PM Felipe González (16%) and the French President Nicolas Sarkozy (15%).
